The Premier League

Posted by Football - April 14th, 2011

Although there has been an English football division league since 1888, the English Premier League has only been in existence since 1992. As such, it is actually the country’s professional football league for association football clubs.

At any given time, there are 20 clubs in the Premier League, each acting as shareholder. The determination of which club stays in or out of the Premier League is dependent on football results or more accurately each association club’s cumulative performance in that particular season. Typically, the football season runs from August until May. Clubs that do not make the cut are relegated to the divisional leagues. Conversely, top performing divisional league clubs are considered for promotion to the Premier League based on their performance in the Football League.

Performance is monitored through a tabulated point scoring system whereby a win would mean 3 points for the winning team, a draw 1 point for both teams while the losing team scores no points. Other contributing factors are the total number of wins a club achieves and goals scored for or against them. There are a total of 38 games to be played and typically a club will play an opponent twice in the season. Once on home ground while the other match will be held on their opponent’s home stadium.

The Premier League is the world’s most watched football league and draws massive amounts of sponsorship from official partners and suppliers. Currently, the Premier League Championship has been dominated by four of its most prestigious clubs namely Manchester United, Arsenal, Chelsea and Liverpool, collectively known as The Big Four.
